The Friends of Norfolk Heritage Park (FONHP) came together in the early 1990s, when many of Sheffield’s parks were neglected and under threat. What began as a small band of local residents with a big love for their park has grown into a dedicated community group, proud guardians of one of the country’s earliest free public parks: 28 hectares of sweeping Victorian parkland with beautiful views over the city.

Working alongside Sheffield City Council, we have helped Norfolk Heritage Park become a Green Flag Award-winning space and supported the recognition of its Grade II* listed status, acknowledging it as one of the most important historic parks in England. From restoring heritage features and supporting new play areas to protecting wildlife habitats and championing safe, welcoming spaces for all, our volunteers have been at the heart of the park’s ongoing revival.

A key milestone in the park’s recent history has been the development of the Centre in the Park, which has become a valued community hub for local residents. The centre provides a welcoming base for community activities, events, meetings and local services, helping to strengthen connections between the park and the people who use it.

Special recognition should be given to Councillor Anne Murphy, whose energy, commitment and community spirit helped bring people together and strengthen the Friends group before her very sad passing. Her enthusiasm for the local community continues to inspire the volunteers who carry the work forward today.

Today, Norfolk Heritage Park is not just somewhere to walk the dog or let the children run free; it is a living, breathing community hub. From major events such as Sheffield Fayre to quiet moments beneath the trees, a new generation of Friends and volunteers is helping to ensure this special place continues to thrive for future generations.
